Testing Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

We are constantly testing in our laboratory various spyware. However, sometimes we are interested to evaluate the effectiveness of anti-spyware programs. In our previous article, we have described tests of popular anti-spyware – SUPERAntiSpyware and Spybot. The results were shocking.

Is it so bad with protection against spyware? We are very concerned about this issue, and we decided to try again, hoping to get results that are more decent. This time we have chosen a very popular program – Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. This is not only anti-spyware protection, but as it is written on one very popular resource dedicated to information security: “Antivirus software Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (MBAM) is designed for quick scan your system to search for different types of malware and treatment of the most complicated infections.”

We did not simulate the “complicated infections” in our test lab, and decided to make a simple test that is anyone can do.

We have installed spyware Elite Keylogger and additionally launched another keylogger. Both programs have successfully captured the information from the computer. That is, all our actions were in spyware logs.

Then, we have updated the database of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, because we know that the effectiveness of all classical methods of protection is very dependent on the relevance of the database, and again run the full system scan.

System scan did not reveal the presence of spyware.

At this moment in the active state were driver of spyware Elite Keylogger and the process of classical keylogger Spic.exe. They can be detected by using program COVERT. Driver can be seen in the Driver monitor, and the process Spic.exe – in the System processes.

The results are disappointing, as in the previous test. Now let us check the folder with twelve spies and rootkits using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

After scanning this folder, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware found threat only from two files.
Here’s a screenshot of the message after checking:

We obtained the following result: the program Malwarebytes Anti-Malware after checking fourteen spyware and rootkit detect threats from only two.
